Last week Saturday, I spent the day volunteering and sharing a booth out at the Los Angeles Festival of Books. This is the third year that I’ve participated in this event with the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society (GLAWS), my favorite community of authors, poets and other industry professionals who are the creators of books. As in the past, it was not just about selling books.
Being at the festival is about being in an atmosphere where thousands of readers and literary artists meet and express our love of books – our enthusiasm for sharing that love with others. Although I have been an avid reader and writer for as long as I can remember, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I considered producing my own work in such a way that others might read it. Even though I actually won awards in High School for both poetry and prose, I didn’t believe in myself enough to continue trying to publish my work. So, at this point, as a retiree, I am just learning about myself as an author.
Consequently, an event such as this festival is a real treasure for me. It’s an opportunity to sit and talk with other authors, to hear about their experiences, struggles and triumphs. It’s an invitation to share my books with all kinds of readers and observe other writers doing the same. I was happy to meet a group of veterans and their supporters who encourage people who have served our country in the military to process and share their experiences by writing. The organization has industry professionals who join the group to support members who would like to publish their writing. I spent time talking with a man who is an enthusiastic author of romance novels and publishes and markets all his own books. I enjoyed talking with so many writers who are generous and helpful with their knowledge and insights about the business of publishing, as well as the craft of writing.
I’m truly grateful to GLAWS for making it possible for writers who can’t afford to rent a booth at LAFOB, to contribute to the cost of participation, and to help inform other writers of the organization and its mission.
