A Bailar!

Events

One of my greatest joys during this season of isolation has been my Afro-Cuban/Afro Brazilian virtual dance class.  I dance on Sundays – dance has always been a spiritual practice for me –  it connects me to my roots, to Mother Earth and to my Creator.  I also dance on other days, when – ever the spirit strikes me!

I come from a musically anchored family. My father, a musician from childhood,  believed that all children should study music; so, my brothers and I all took music lessons of one kind or another. I was offered piano lessons before I was six, but I could never sit still long enough to practice.  Since my whole family danced to rumba, cha-cha-cha, calypso and merengue, and I was always out on the dance floor with my elders, my parents sent me to dance classes.  Soon ballet, tap and folk dancing also became part of the rhythms of my life.  I’ve studied many forms of dance –  there’s never been a time in my life when I wasn’t enjoying the blessings of movement linked to music whether Classical, Jazz, Folk, African, Afro-Caribbean.

The COVID lock down robbed me of the Afro-Cuban folkloric dance classes I have attended with Cuban teacher, Kati Hernandez, over the last five years. But all was not lost!  Kimberly Miguel Mullen, who has taught Afro-Cuban/Afro Brazilian classes in many parts of the world, had dreamed of creating a Global Dance Activation in a virtual studio – and that dream truly became manifest during 2020 – just when it was needed the most!

So, I still dance on Sundays with the KMM Virtual Dance Studio – from my living room!

If you’ve been wanting to explore the world of the Afro-Caribbean Music and Dance, I invite you to take advantage of the KMM 5-Day Free Samba Reggae Challenge. Kimberly reminds us that March is a month of Joy, Unity, and Community – and that Samba Reggae is the “most joyful dance on the Planet”!
